A bit about my academic past.
Once upon a time I went to grad school and earned a Ph.D. in English Literature. Specialties: the Grotesque (cf. my dissertation abstract), Lit Theory, and the 18th century. I had the time of my life in grad school. It's one of those rare opportunities to indulge your curiosity and passion all day every day amongst people who are truly, madly, deeply excited about the same things you are.
I haven't done much writing in this area since graduation, though I think about it quite a bit. Perhaps we'll see more of the grotesque as we continue to come done from the high of soft edge, bubbly graphic design and art and, well, life. We're just not made to sustain that kind of beauty for long. It's a bubble, like the economy. The grotesque could be the sharp, pointy stick that pops it.

Perhaps in this, the summer of unemployment, I'll indulge this passion again. In the meantime, I am revisiting Mark Dery's The Pyrotechnic Insanitarium: American Culture on the Brink. Dated of course, but still compelling. So I leave you with this kind of beauty:
