On the recently-described death of interaction design.
Just spent the last few weeks updating my portfolio and website (I’m looking for work—hire me!). So I’m rather late to the party inspired by Ideo founder Bill Moggridge’s comment that interaction design as a discipline may now be unnecessary.
The story goes that Moggridge said as much at an SF screening of Objectified. Jumping off from Moggridge’s comment, Tim McCoy at Cooper concluded that interaction design “as a discrete service offering or a career path,” is a dead-end job.
I couldn’t agree more. I hope to spend more time thinking, and writing, about my reasons. But first: My initial response to the surrounding commentary is a sense that we're being disingenuous. A lot of response has been thoughtful and considered (and considerate) of course. I'm reminded though of the early debate about the definition of IA. And I wonder why people seem to dance around the “what if” question. What if it is true that interaction design as a discrete role or career is dead? What then?
